A Newtyle butcher has savoured the delights of being crowned the world’s best Scotch pie-maker for the second time.

Delighted Alan Pirie, of James Pirie & Son, was thrilled to collect the coveted title at a glittering bash hosted by TV presenter Carol Smillie.

Previous winner Alan travelled from the village of Newtyle, Angus, to taste success at The World Championship Scotch Pie Awards 2020 in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, earlier today.

Alan told of his shock at out-baking more than 75 expert pie producers to land the top prize just two years after his first victory.

He said: “Well, I was not expecting that. We won, again. I am speechless.

“To have once again been given the ultimate accolade in our profession is just excellent.”

In 21 years of the competition, only three other pie makers can lay claim to ‘doing the double.’

To add to James Pirie & Son’s successful day they also picked up a Bronze award for their Steak and Haggis Pie.

Pie-daft Carol, 58, added: “The World Championship Scotch Pie Awards really is one of the highlights of my year.

“I have been hosting since 2016 and I have seen many well-deserved winners in all the categories take to the stage, but to see Alan up here again is wonderful.”

Alasdair Smith, chief executive of event organisers Scottish Bakers said: “I am incredibly proud to be a part of this competition recognising excellence and celebrating success.”

There was also an award for another Angus village baker when Letham’s Keptie Bakery was a Bronze recipient for their Apple Pie.
