Cascade Water Products Shortlisted in Scottish Edge Awards
Arbroath based Cascade Water Products have been shortlisted as one of the 17 finalists in this years Scottish Edge Awards.
This Angus business has developed the first commercial short retention micro-greywater recycling system which is carbon negative and simple to use. It reduces damage to the environment caused by water extraction and climate change.
When Carolyn met Peter Holdsworth, she was a single parent of four boys.
The teenagers were prone to taking long hot showers and she constantly knocked on the bathroom door calling out “stop wasting water and energy”.
The seeds for this passion for saving water were sown during the long hot summer of 1976. Carolyn was 13, there was a drought and John Noakes and the Blue Peter team gave water saving tips.
This must have made an impression on her and meeting Peter Holdsworth, inventor and engineer, in 2009 sealed Carolyn’s fate as he was working on developing domestic grey water reuse systems at the time. Being a thrifty Scot, this seemed like a good idea.
It was after the UKTI representative for Houston, USA visited their tiny innovation stand at Ecobuild 2014 that she began to realise that saving water was not just a good idea but a global necessity.
Scottish EDGE is a competition aimed at identifying and supporting Scotland’s up-and-coming, innovative, high-growth entrepreneurial talent.
To date, EDGE has awarded over £16 million to 421 Scottish businesses. In the last round of Scottish EDGE, cash prizes of over £1 million were shared amongst 33 winners across four different competition categories.
Having ‘gone virtual’ this round, the Finalists will take part in a virtually distanced pitching session on 11 May, followed by the Awards Ceremony on 25 May. The Round 17 Final and Awards will support Scotland’s most innovative, high-growth potential start-up businesses with up to £150,000 in cash and an all-encompassing business support package.
During an intensive four-day long semi-final, 45 shortlisted entrepreneurs across Scotland pitched their businesses to a collective panel of 16 judges. The emerging 19 multisector finalists will now pitch for a share in Scottish EDGE’s total Round 17 prize pot of £1 million to a heavyweight panel of judges.
One of the key Speakers will be Sir Tom Hunter, a Scottish businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. In 2005 he received a knighthood for “services to Philanthropy and to Entrepreneurship in Scotland”.
The Hunter Foundation has been one of the main supporters of Scottish EDGE since the competition was spun out from the public to the private sector in 2014.
With this year’s applications up by 24% and a record 305 submissions, Scottish Edge have seen an “entrepreneurial leap” being taken during Covid. Female co-founders also represented 57% of applications for this round.
