Owner to Retire After 35 Years in Charge of Busy Arbroath Bike Shop
The owner of an Arbroath bike shop has announced he is retiring.
Steve Smith set up Arbroath Bike Chain in Market Place in 1990, moving to its current premises in Commerce Street 10 years later.
The bike shop sells and repairs cycles and e-bikes, offering a weekly pick-up service covering the area between Stonehaven and Dundee.
Steve says the business will continue under the ownership of Jason and Kelly Bennett.
Breaking the news on social media, Steve wrote: “To all my customers (many of whom have become good friends) who have supported Angus Bike Chain over 35 years.
“After 35 years in business as the ‘local bike shop’, I’ve decided it’s time to step down and retire.
“Angus Bike Chain will continue to trade under the new owners, Jason and Kelly.
“There has never been a dull moment, it’s been a privilege and a pleasure to have been involved and support the local community, and I would like to thank every one of you.”
He said that “many good lasting cycling memories have been made over the years”, adding: “Now it brings me great pleasure to see Jason and Kelly breathing new life into the business.
“I wish them every success for the future. With your continued support, Arbroath will keep its local independent bike shop, where you will always be welcome to chat about all your cycling needs.
“See you on the road for more tales of the wheel, Steve.”
The announcement attracted dozens of replies from well-wishers.
Emma Moore wrote: “Happy retirement dad; looking forward to seeing more of you and for you to finally get a good run at your growing to-do list.
“Couldn’t think of abetter out-of-school club for me, where, like all other staff members have said, they learned so many life skills.
“I certainly benefited from learning your great way with people and running a business.
“Many happy memories as a family in Angus Bike Chain.
“Good luck to Jase and Kelly, wishing you guys all the success for the future. Hope you have as much fun as we all did!”
Jim Tosh posted: “I’ve really enjoyed the many great group rides we’ve shared, and I’m grateful to you (and Paul) for keeping my bikes running so well over the years.
“You’ll be missed in the shop, but I hope you enjoy every mile of the next chapter.
“See you out on a bike soon.”
