Birkhill Inn Voted Best Pub in Angus

One of Tayside’s favourite bar restaurants, the Birkhill Inn, has been voted best pub in Angus in a national competitition.

The “Birkie” won the accolade in the annual National Pub & Bar Awards, fighting off stiff competition from pubs and bar restaurants across the length and breadth of Angus.

It will now go through to the grand final along with other county section winners from across the UK, with more than a dozen regional winners to be announced, while the overall national winner will also be revealed at a gala celebration in Euston Square in London on June 26.

The National Pub & Bar Awards grand final will also choose the winners of the prestigious Pub Brand of the Year, Bar Brand of the Year and the Tyrrells Tyrrellbly Good Taste Award.

Doogie Herd, bar manager at the Birkhill Inn, said, “I’m thrilled to bits, everybody that runs a bad thinks theirs is the best, so I’m delighted that others think so too.

“What makes the Birkie great is that we’ve got everything here, a great bar, a hugely popular child-friendly restaurant, a brilliant beer garden, great regulars, and everything comes together to make it one big fantastic place to come and visit.

“And of course there’s our world famous steak pie!

“But it’s the people who make it and the staff here are all great, the customers are wonderful and we never really have any issues at all.

“It’ll be a lot of competition at the grand final but hopefully we can do well on the night and do Angus, Dundee and the whole of Scotland proud.”

Bertie Mooney’s in Dundee, Montagues in Kirkcaldy and the Inn at Loch Tummel will also go through to the grand final in the competition, which is organised by the Pub & Bar magazine.

Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar said: “The national awards celebrate the entrepreneurship and individual brilliance of the hospitality industry and the Birkhill Inn is highly deserving of this praise.”
