Research and Insights
The tourism sector is of vital importance to the Scottish economy, with the latest figures indicating that tourism contributes around £6 billion to the Scottish economy (5% of total).
Since 1999, the Moffat Centre has worked on behalf of VisitScotland to compile the national statistical performance indicators of the country’s cultural tourism attractions.
Visitor Attraction Barometer / Visitor Attraction Monitor
The Visitor Attraction Barometer is one of the earliest indicators of tourism performance in Scotland, with trend data of over 600 visitor attractions across Scotland. Participants can use the data to benchmark their performance against businesses in a similar sector, region, Local Authority area, and geographical location.
The information gained can be used to develop business plans, grant and funding applications and offers a unique insight into competitors’ performances at a local level. Visitor numbers are treated as confidential and the information received is only used to inform trends.
The Visitor Attraction Monitor is used at a local and national government level to inform policy as well as being an important tool of tourism performance analysis.
Participating attractions have access to an online portal enabling them to submit their visitor data and see ‘live data’ by category, Local Authority, and also historic visitor numbers.

Scottish Accommodation Occupancy Survey
The Scottish Accommodation Occupancy Survey (SAOS) gathers data on occupancy in Scotland’s tourist accommodation. The data is based on a sample of accommodation providers via an opt-in voluntary survey.
The survey provides insight into overnight stays in Scotland via annual reports and regular monthly sector reports for the current year. Five accommodation sectors are included (hotels, guesthouses / B&B, self-catering, hostels, caravan and camping).
Accommodation businesses are encouraged to take part in the survey. Businesses can enter their data using an online tool which is free, quick, and easy to use.
By entering data, accommodation businesses can monitor their business performance, receive reports to benchmark against others, use the reports as proof of performance for funding, and identify trends and growth.
If you are a Scottish accommodation business or Scottish Visitor Attraction and would like to benefit from this free opportunity to monitor your business, email the Moffat Centre at info@moffatcentre.com.
