Fire-hit Monifieth restaurant to reopen in temporary location 10 miles away

A Monifieth restaurant is temporarily relocating after its premises was destroyed in a blaze. Bosses behind Raj Mahal made the announcement over the weekend.

It comes around six weeks after the High Street premises and adjoining flats were damaged in a fire on March 26. They said the blaze caused “devastating damage” and confirmed they are temporarily relocating to Wellbank, 10 miles away.

An open day will be held at the new premises on Tuesday, May 12.

In a statement on social media, they said they are working towards a return to Monifieth High Street in the future. They said:

“Firstly, we would like to apologise for our recent absence on social media. Following the fire, it has been an incredibly difficult and emotional time for us all. As many of you know, we worked tirelessly to build Raj Mahal into something we were truly proud of. Sadly, the fire caused devastating damage and took away so much that we had worked hard to achieve, despite every effort to control the situation.

“We would like to sincerely thank everyone for the kindness, patience, and support you have shown us throughout this challenging period. Your messages and encouragement have meant a great deal to our team. While we continue working towards returning to Monifieth High Street in the future, we are pleased to share some positive news with our loyal customers – we have secured a temporary restaurant location in Wellbank.

“To mark this new chapter, we will be hosting an open day on Tuesday, where complimentary food and tasters will be available for everyone who visits us. We would be delighted to welcome both familiar and new faces as we begin this journey. We will also be accepting bookings from this weekend onwards.”

No one was injured during the incident.

Fire chiefs believe the blaze was caused by a suspected fault with an extraction fan, according to a Freedom of Information response obtained by The Courier.
