Montrose gaming café aiming for next level in community success story
A Montrose gaming café is expanding its community reach as it sets its sights on a town centre expansion.
Redcap Games was launched on the Angus town’s High Street by Luke Brown and his partner Stacey Walker almost three years ago. It set up in the former Madison’s café premises and quickly established itself as a popular hub with gamers of all ages and abilities.
Luke says the success of the venture is built on the ethos that “there is always a seat at our table”.
With continuing support from Business Gateway it is now focused on growing all aspects of its popularity. This includes a volunteering programme and after-school gaming clubs at six schools in Angus and Aberdeenshire.
And there are plans to move into larger premises later this year – still on Montrose High Street. More details of the expansion will be revealed in due course.
Redcap combines a retail store and gaming café. It offers everything from board games and trading cards to tabletop roleplaying games and miniatures. The café operates a free-to-play model giving customers ‘try before you buy’ access to its library of games.
And Redcap also works closely with the local council to support groups with additional support needs. It helps build confidence to take part in their wide-ranging activities. A volunteering programme has also helped create a pathway into employment.
Luke said:
“Redcap Games started from a simple idea, bringing people together through a shared love of gaming.
“It’s been amazing to see how that has grown into a real community hub.
“Whether it’s in the shop or through our school clubs, creating a space where people feel welcome and included is what it’s all about.”
He hopes the expansion into much larger premises will allow Redcap to develop separate sensory spaces for gamers.
Business Gateway’s support has included signposting to Angus Council funding and a £2,000 Start and Grow Business Grant. It also connected the team with DLR Media to strengthen online advertising and social media engagement.
Luke added:
“Business Gateway has supported us at every stage, from shaping the initial offering to helping grow and expand the business.
“The advice, funding support and digital guidance have made a huge difference, particularly in allowing us to invest in our school clubs and reach more young people across Angus.”
Business Gateway adviser George Ellis said:
“Luke and Stacey have built something truly special with Redcap Games, creating a business that not only succeeds commercially but also delivers real value to the local community.
“Their focus on inclusion and connection is at the heart of everything they do.”
