Football legend David Beckham ‘delighted’ with gift from small Angus business

A small Angus business has been praised by football legend and keen gardener David Beckham.

Nutscene, based in Forfar and nearby village Kingsmuir, took the chance at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show to present the former footballer with a roll of its award-winning garden twine.

The gift of the special edition tin of green twine, designed for the company’s 20th visit to the show, delighted Sir David, who said he will now use it in his own garden at home.

Daria Szubert, operations manager at Nutscene Twines Ltd, said: “Sir David was delighted with the twine and said it was a lovely gift and thanked us.”

The chance to present Sir David with the twine came on Monday when he and King Charles were together at a private tour. The footballer and the King designed a garden together for this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Daria said:

“Monday morning is press day where journalists and celebrities have a chance to visit the show. The afternoon session is private and reserved for the royal family, where they have a chance to visit all the amazing gardens. The King and David Beckham designed one of the gardens.

“When I was invited to represent Nutscene as one of the few stands invited to the royal tour I decided to try to present Sir David with the gift.”

She added: “I said to company owner Shona Young that it would be amazing if I had a chance to give to David Beckham our tin of twine specially designed for this show. I approached him with our green tin of twine, took a quick selfie and gifted him twine to use in his garden. He was delighted. As a gardener, Sir David can use the same Nutscene twine as used in many of the gold-awarded gardens at the show.”

This happened just before another exceptional moment for the company. CEO Shona said:

“We were also awarded a five-star award – the highest there is – for our stand this year. We are absolutely delighted to have received the highest accolade and also that our product is now going to be used by Sir David.”

The company’s traditional garden twines are exported all over the world from its Kingsmuir factory. In 2021 it opened its first shop in Forfar. The twines are made with traditional methods and original machinery using biodegradable materials.
