Building the Skills Powering Scotland’s Offshore Wind Future

Montrose is rapidly establishing itself as a national hub for Scotland’s offshore wind industry. At the heart of this growth is Montrose Port, which is undergoing a major, multi‑phase £115 million redevelopment to create a world‑class Operations and Maintenance superhub.

Already the operational base for Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm, Seagreen, Montrose Port is also developing significant new infrastructure to support the Inch Cape offshore wind project.

As further offshore wind developments come forward, this scale of investment presents a once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity – to ensure people across Angus have the skills, experience and qualifications needed to secure high‑value, long‑term jobs in the green energy economy.

The Montrose Port Skills Academy has been created to meet this opportunity head‑on. It will be the first training facility of its kind in Scotland to be located within a live offshore wind operations port, allowing learners to train in the same environment where they will go on to work.

This close integration between industry and education ensures training is:

  • Practical and industry‑relevant
  • Aligned directly with employer needs
  • Designed to support real career pathways into offshore wind

From new entrants to experienced workers looking to upskill, the Academy will play a vital role in building a future‑ready workforce for Scotland’s offshore wind sector.

A Landmark Building with a New Purpose

The Skills Academy will be based in the historic Customs House on Meridian Street – a 19th‑century landmark on Montrose Port’s North Quay.

Purchased by Montrose Port Authority in 2023, the building is being carefully restored and repurposed as:

  • A modern training and education facility
  • Flexible lecture and hands‑on workshop space
  • Commercial office space
  • A community café connecting the port with the town

Located just steps from the quayside, the Academy’s setting reflects a commitment to work‑integrated, vocational training, where learners gain skills in a real operational environment.

Backed by the Tay Cities Deal

The project is part‑funded through the Tay Cities Deal, with £1.25 million from the Industrial Investment Programme contributing to the capital costs of the facility.

This investment reflects a long‑term commitment to:

  • Skills development in growth sectors
  • Capturing the economic benefits of the energy transition
  • Supporting inclusive growth and quality employment

Creating Opportunity Across Angus

Although based in Montrose, the Skills Academy is designed to serve people from across Angus.

Offshore wind offers some of the best‑paid, long‑term jobs in the region, and the Academy will create a strong local pipeline of skilled workers – helping to keep talent, wages and expertise within the Angus economy.

For businesses considering locating or expanding operations at Montrose Port, access to a local, job‑ready workforce provides a clear commercial advantage:

  • Faster recruitment
  • Lower training and onboarding costs
  • A skilled workforce with strong local knowledge
