Montrose couple’s free-to-play gaming cafe to expand into empty unit in town

A Montrose couple’s gaming cafe is set to expand into an empty unit in the Angus town. Redcap Games was founded in October 2023 by Luke Brown and partner Stacey to bring together fans of favourites such as tabletop wargame Warhammer.

Their current shop at 79 High Street combines a retail store, gaming cafe and events space, offering board games, trading cards, roleplaying games and miniatures. There are also regular tournaments, quizzes, meetups and figure painting sessions. The cafe operates a free-to-play model, encouraging customers to try games from its extensive library before making a purchase.

Now, Redcaps is set to move into larger premises at 116 High Street. It will occupy the former family-run shop SES Mobility, which specialised in mobility equipment and living aids. Its new Montrose hub will enable Redcaps to increase its seating to 44 from a current total of 32.

Luke told The Courier:

“At the moment, there is simply not enough room, and we would hate to turn people away.

“We currently have three normal tabletop game racks, but we plan to go up to nine or even 12 racks for full player use.”

Redcaps has worked with Angus Council to support groups with additional support needs. It has also run after-school gaming clubs in six schools throughout Angus and neighbouring Aberdeenshire.

The business runs a local volunteering programme, resulting in several volunteers progressing into paid roles.

The new shop will have a “sensory-safe” environment. Luke outlined how the new premises will aid inclusivity.

He continued:

“We are also intending to segregate the store with ceiling-high panels for customers with ADHD and anxiety issues, looking for some peace and quiet to play and browse.

“We plan to encourage the hobby by having players play with people from other cities and towns to socialise a bit more.”

The couple hope to be in their new premises by August. They say they have received valuable assistance from Business Gateway.
