Montrose Music Festival countdown begins for biggest and best Mofest yet
Montrose Music Festival organisers are putting the finishing touches to what they say will be their biggest ever community event later this month.
The free three-day festival runs from Friday May 29 to Sunday May 31.
It will feature performances in more than 20 venues throughout Montrose, making it one of the largest live music events in the north-east of Scotland.
The weekend centrepiece will once again be the popular High Street stage. It is sponsored this year by GoFibre, with crowds expected to pack the area around the Town House on Saturday May 30 from 11.30am to 5pm. Half the High Street will be closed off for a range of other attractions including stalls and a funfair.
Main stage MC duties will be led by Ross Thomson, well known locally as the stadium announcer for Montrose FC.
This year’s line-up includes local acts Nuclear Aliens from Outer Space, Sorella, Remedy and Calum Campbell. Scottish Young Live Artist of the Year winner Katie Nicoll is also set to star in the open-air event. Katie recently performed in her home town of Kirriemuir as thousands of AC/DC fans flocked to Bonfest.
Lathallan School Pipe Band and local groups the Gordon School of Dance and Evolution Dance Company will also perform.
MoFest committee chairman Matt Innes said the group was especially excited about the platform it is providing for young musicians.
“We’re really pleased to welcome two venues this year offering sober spaces for younger performers and attendees alike.”
Those are town cafes Chic and the Funky Wee Teapot.
“We have a lot of young talent from the local open mic scene taking to the main stage and performing across venues,” Matt added.
“For some it will be the biggest gig they’ve ever played. We’ll also be launching a digital programme for the first time this year.
“The support from local businesses and venues has been fantastic as always – from putting on bands to sponsoring our festival programme – and we are incredibly grateful.”
Matt added: “MoFest has always been about bringing the community together and celebrating local creativity.”
It includes artists who have contributed original artwork to the festival’s merch designs.
“We’d also like to thank Angus Council and Police Scotland for their continued support in helping us deliver a safe and successful festival for the whole community,” he added.
William Dorward, owner of the Market Arms on Montrose High Street, said:
“MoFest always gives the town a real boost. The pubs, venues and local businesses all benefit from the extra footfall across the weekend. There’s a great atmosphere everywhere you go. It’s brilliant to see all the venues full with people out supporting live music.”
Festival merchandise is available from the MoFest online store or at the Pop! pop-up venue from May 25-29.
The volunteer-run festival is made possible through community fundraising, local sponsorship, donations and programme and merchandise sales.
