Well-established Angus builders’ merchant closing down

A long-established Angus builders’ merchant is closing its doors.

Jewson in Forfar will cease trading at the end of today (Friday).

The branch on Carseview Road, which employs fewer than 10 staff, has supplied trade and individual customers in the town for many years.

As well as a wide range of timber, building supplies and fixings, the business also offers professional power tool hire.

The Jewson Forfar website confirms that the site is “closed” and a sign in store today advises customers to travel to the Montrose or Dundee branches.

The website states: “Sorry, Jewson Forfar has recently closed.

“This branch might have closed, but we still have excellent branches nearby offering a range of specialist services.”

It is understood consultations are ongoing with staff regarding next steps.

Earlier this year, Jewson announced a “regional restructure” to position itself for “accelerated growth”. The firm invested in major refurbishments in a number of its Scottish branches.

The Jewson Forfar closure was described as a “blow for the town” by locals.

It comes as another local timber merchant fell into administration last year before being saved at the 11th hour.

Orchard Timber shut with immediate effect, with staff made redundant, following the collapse of parent company National Timber.

It was acquired from administration in December last year by Alloa-headquartered Beatsons Building Supplies, with staff offered their jobs back.

Founded in Cambridgeshire in 1836, Jewson is one of the UK’s largest builders’ merchants with more than 500 branches.

In 2022, Danish building materials distributor STARK Group announced it had agreed to buy Saint Gobain Building Distribution UK, which included Jewson, in a £740 million deal.

The Courier has approached Jewson for comment.
