Major Forfar Golf Club investment as new operators create almost 30 jobs
Forfar Golf Club has announced the next phase of a major investment programme after its operators revealed nearly 30 new jobs have been created since the biggest change in its history earlier this year.
In March, members voted to enter a partnership with The Ancient Links Golf Company (ALGC) over the running of the 155-year-old club.
Major investment has been made in the course and facilities at Forfar.
Clubhouse improvements, a redesigned pro shop and a state-of-the-art irrigation system are among major projects now under way.
Forfar holds a unique place as the world’s first 18-hole course from inception.
It was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris and redesigned by five-time Open Champion James Braid in 1926.
The ‘Braid’s Best’ 15th hole at Forfar has already been restored to its original layout in the work undertaken by the new operators.
On the course, all 78 bunkers have been excavated, reshaped and renovated. There has been significant investment in the greenkeeping machinery fleet.
A dedicated junior changing area has been created in the revamped locker room facilities.
Forfar’s junior golf programme currently involves more than 160 youngsters.
The most significant on-course investment will be the installation of an entire new irrigation system.
This will provide greater precision and control to deliver the highest standards of course presentation.
An extensive winter works programme is planned ahead of the 2027 season.
ALGC said that since the partnership began in March, 28 new jobs have been created.
Forfar Golf Club general manager Owen Leslie said:
“Few golf clubs anywhere can claim the history and architectural significance of Forfar.
“From Old Tom Morris and James Braid to the remarkable rig and furrow landscape, this is a course with a genuinely unique place in the history of the game.
“What has been achieved here since March is extraordinary.
“In a relatively short period, we’ve transformed significant parts of the course and clubhouse, introduced a new restaurant, invested heavily in our facilities and equipment, and made a real difference to the experience of members and visitors.
“But what is particularly exciting is that this is only the beginning.
“The next phase represents an even greater commitment, with major investment in the clubhouse and golf course infrastructure that will benefit Forfar for decades to come.
“We want Forfar to be recognised not simply for its remarkable history, but as one of Scotland’s outstanding golfing experiences.”
Club president Gerald Callander said:
“The response from members to everything that has happened over the past few months has been extremely positive.
“The improvements to the course, facilities and restaurant have made a real difference.
“For several years, membership numbers remained relatively static.
“This year we’ve welcomed a significant number of new members, and we’re already receiving enquiries for next season.
“The opportunity for members to enjoy other courses operated by ALGC at a modest additional cost is another attractive benefit.”
“Forfar has always been a special club with a remarkable history.
“There’s a renewed energy around the club, and members are genuinely excited about both what has been achieved and what’s still to come.”
Investor-led ALGC launched its portfolio with the takeover of operations at Scotscraig Golf Club in Tayport.
The business is also awaiting a decision over its proposed takeover of Montrose Links.
It plans to invest £3 million over the first five years of a long-term £30,000-a-year lease.
A public consultation closed last month and a report on the plan is being prepared for a full meeting of Angus Council.
